Paris is chic. Paris is elegant. But Paris can also be cool. It can be edgy. Over the years, there have been a lot of very hip collective spaces popping up around town. Some are ephemeral and last only the summer. Others are permanent. They all share a commonality that they want to create a tight community. A sharing, caring, connected group. Through music, art, food, and fun, these places have been successful and have become exciting hubs to hang out at. Depending on the program, you can stumble across anything from a jazz concert to a yoga class. Here are our top picks:
1) Ground Control
I have recommended Ground Control before and I’ll recommend it again. It has a great outdoor space where industrial edginess meets nature. You’ll find large tables and chairs for basking in the sun and relaxing as well as a great collection of shops and food stands.
2) Les Grands Voisins
Situated on the left bank, you can find this thriving arts and crafts hub. A sort of atelier with a larger selection of food stands and shops. Great for the summer evenings for catching a concert.
This place is the coolest of the cool with something for everyone. Based in an old SNCF shed, the place is a graffitti haven with extensive colourful murals. There are food trucks parked in the area serving up some delicious street food and there is a roller skate park! On top of that, the inside bar and dancefloor are perfect for the festive months and grooving the night away!
4) La Recyclerie
Reuse, recycle, reduce: these three R actions inspire this eccentric coffee shop with multiple activities. Throughout the day there are cooking classes, DIY workshops, yard sales, loaning of tools and appliances… It is a place of connecting and learning about the environment we share. It is an oasis – an island of green in the city – and it hosts a plethora of interesting events that shouldn’t be missed.
5) Le 88 Ménilmontant
Installed on the site of a former iconic Ménilmontant district, the 88 Ménilmontant has opened its doors for a second year still with its values of ecology, civic responsibility and culture which inspire the exciting summer program. It is a 900m2 outdoor space (a rare find in the heart of Paris!) which welcomes the young and old to spend sunny days and bubbly nights enjoying their activities.
6) Le Consulat
Finally, Le Consulat has just opened close to Montparnasse and offers a welcoming and hip place to rub shoulders with a mixture of interesting people while profiting from their delicious canteen offerings.
